The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦631.3 billion for nine road infrastructure projects across Nigeria as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve transportation networks, stimulate economic activities and strengthen national integration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, following the FEC meeting presided over by President Tinubu.

According to the Federal Ministry of Works, the approvals cover strategic road construction projects in several states, as well as remedial works and rehabilitation interventions designed to address critical infrastructure deficiencies and improve connectivity across the country.

The projects are expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods, reduce transportation difficulties, improve access to markets and essential services, and support agricultural, commercial and industrial activities in the benefiting communities.

The ministry said the approvals reaffirm the administration’s commitment to developing a robust national road network capable of unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and promoting balanced development across the federation.

Among the major projects highlighted are the 81.1-kilometre Ado–Ilawe–Ilumaba–Ikole Road in Ekiti State, the 95-kilometre Etuke–Okene–Ankpa–Otopa Road in Kogi State, and the Bichi Ring Road in Kano State.

The Council also approved road projects in Adamawa and Taraba states, remedial works on the East-West Road, and the rehabilitation of the Sokoto–Illela Road.

The 81.1-kilometre Ado–Ilawe–Ilumaba–Ikole Road in Ekiti State is expected to improve transportation links among communities in the state and adjoining areas.

When completed, the road is expected to facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, strengthen commercial exchanges and improve access to markets and other economic centres.

The project is also expected to reduce transportation difficulties for residents and businesses while creating opportunities for economic activities along the route.

In Kogi State, the Council approved the 95-kilometre Etuke–Okene–Ankpa–Otopa Road, a strategic infrastructure intervention expected to improve regional connectivity and support commercial transportation.

The road is expected to strengthen links between communities, ease the movement of goods and passengers, and provide improved access to markets for farmers, traders and other economic operators.

In Kano State, the approval for the Bichi Ring Road is expected to improve urban connectivity and ease traffic congestion within the rapidly expanding metropolitan area.

The project is also expected to support commercial activities and improve transportation within and around Bichi, where growing population and economic activities have increased the importance of efficient road infrastructure.

The ministry said the projects form part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to addressing infrastructure gaps and improving road transportation across different parts of the country.

Beyond the projects in Ekiti, Kogi and Kano states, the Federal Executive Council approved additional road interventions in Adamawa and Taraba states.

The Council also approved remedial works on the East-West Road, a major transportation corridor serving communities and economic activities in Nigeria’s oil-producing region.

The road is particularly important for the movement of people, agricultural produce, petroleum-related materials and other commercial goods. Improvements to the route are expected to support economic activities and enhance transportation within the affected areas.

Similarly, the rehabilitation of the Sokoto–Illela Road is expected to improve road conditions and strengthen connectivity in Sokoto State.

The road is important to local transportation and commercial exchanges, including cross-border economic activities involving communities around the Nigeria–Niger border.

The rehabilitation intervention is expected to improve the movement of goods and passengers while supporting traders and other businesses that depend on the route.

Although the ministry identified these additional interventions, it did not provide a detailed breakdown of the approved amounts allocated to each project in the announcement.

In a related development, Umahi announced significant progress on the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway, one of Nigeria’s major transportation corridors.

The minister disclosed that the first 118 kilometres of the highway had been completed, while construction on the remaining sections was nearing completion.

According to the ministry, the completed sections include both asphaltic and concrete pavement, with solar-powered streetlights installed to improve visibility and road safety at night.

The progress represents an important milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to upgrade a highway that serves as a critical link between the Federal Capital Territory and major commercial centres in northern Nigeria.

The expressway facilitates passenger movement, freight transportation and commercial activities across several states. It also provides an important connection for businesses and traders moving goods between the North and other parts of the country.

Improved road conditions along the corridor are expected to reduce travel difficulties, enhance transportation efficiency and support economic integration.

The installation of solar-powered streetlights is also intended to improve visibility at night, although the overall safety benefits will depend on effective maintenance, appropriate traffic management and the condition of the completed road sections.

The ministry said the progress reflects the administration’s emphasis on infrastructure delivery, road quality and improved connectivity along major national transportation corridors.

The latest approvals underscore the Federal Government’s position that road infrastructure is essential to economic growth, national integration and sustainable development.

Across Nigeria, road networks play a critical role in connecting rural communities to urban centres, linking agricultural production areas to markets and facilitating the distribution of industrial goods.

For farmers, accessible and well-maintained roads can reduce the time and cost required to transport produce to markets, potentially helping to limit post-harvest losses and improve earnings.

For traders and manufacturers, efficient road transportation can reduce logistics costs, improve supply-chain reliability and make it easier to move goods between production centres, warehouses and consumers.

The roads are also important to the delivery of essential services, including healthcare and education, particularly in rural and underserved communities where poor transportation infrastructure can restrict access to hospitals, schools and other public facilities.

The Federal Government expects strategic investments in road construction and rehabilitation to support private-sector activities, encourage investment and create employment opportunities through construction and related services.

Road projects can generate jobs for engineers, construction workers, equipment operators, suppliers and other professionals involved in project execution. They can also stimulate commercial activities in communities along the construction corridors.

However, the scale and sustainability of these benefits will depend on the timely completion of the projects, the quality of construction, effective supervision and adequate maintenance after commissioning.

The distribution of the approved projects across different states reflects the importance of transportation infrastructure to national integration.

By improving links between communities and economic centres, roads can facilitate trade, strengthen social interactions and promote cooperation among different regions of the country.

The East-West Road, for instance, serves important economic activities in the Niger Delta, while the Sokoto–Illela Road supports transportation and commercial exchanges in Nigeria’s northwestern border communities.

Similarly, the proposed interventions in Ekiti, Kogi, Kano, Adamawa and Taraba states are expected to address transportation needs in different parts of the federation.

The Federal Government’s infrastructure programme is therefore intended not only to improve individual roads but also to strengthen the broader network through which people, goods and services move across the country.

Improved connectivity can also make less-developed areas more accessible to investors and businesses, potentially supporting local enterprise development and expanding economic opportunities.

Nevertheless, achieving these outcomes will require the government to ensure that road investments are guided by clear priorities, transparent procurement processes and effective project monitoring.

While the FEC approval represents a significant financial commitment, the actual benefits to Nigerians will depend on how effectively the projects are implemented.

Timely execution, adherence to engineering standards, transparent contract administration and adequate funding are essential to ensuring that the approved investments deliver value for money.

The Federal Ministry of Works will also need to maintain effective supervision of contractors and ensure that construction activities meet the required technical specifications.

For communities along the affected routes, the immediate expectations will include improved road conditions, reduced travel time, safer journeys and better access to economic opportunities.

The maintenance of completed roads will remain equally important. Without regular maintenance and proper drainage, newly constructed or rehabilitated roads can deteriorate prematurely, leading to additional public expenditure.

The ministry’s emphasis on road quality and infrastructure delivery therefore places responsibility on the relevant authorities to ensure that approved projects translate into durable public assets.

The absence of a project-by-project financial breakdown in the announcement also means that further details on the allocation of the ₦631.3 billion, implementation schedules and completion timelines would be useful in assessing progress and monitoring expenditure.

The latest FEC approvals form part of the Tinubu administration’s wider infrastructure development programme, which identifies transportation as a key instrument for economic expansion and national development.

The Federal Ministry of Works said it remained committed to developing and maintaining a strong national road network that supports economic growth, strengthens national integration and advances the administration’s vision of shared prosperity.

With ₦631.3 billion approved for the nine road projects and significant progress reported on the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway, attention will now focus on implementation, construction quality and the timely delivery of the projects.

For Nigerians in the benefiting communities, the ultimate measure of success will be whether the investments lead to better roads, easier movement, lower transportation burdens, stronger commercial activities and improved living conditions.

As the Federal Government continues its infrastructure drive, effective execution, transparency, accountability and sustained maintenance will be critical to ensuring that the approved expenditure delivers lasting benefits to citizens and the national economy.

The announcement was signed by Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Information and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Works.
