The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has described the transformation of Alaba International Market in Lagos as a remarkable demonstration of Nigerian enterprise, innovation and economic resilience, saying the market has evolved beyond a conventional trading centre into an emerging technology and commercial hub with continental significance.

Musa stated this on Thursday at a gala and award night held in Ikoyi, Lagos, to mark the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba”, where he commended the business community for its sustained contribution to Nigeria’s economic development and technological advancement.

The Defence Minister, who addressed a gathering of government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders, said the newly commissioned modern commercial complexes within the market represented more than physical infrastructure.

According to him, the developments are a reflection of the vision, perseverance and collective determination of the Alaba business community to reposition the market and make it more competitive, modern and relevant to the changing demands of commerce and technology.

He congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President-General, High Chief Dr. Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, for providing leadership in the transformation process.

Musa also commended the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for its support and commitment to improving infrastructure and the business environment around the market.

The Minister noted that Alaba International Market had over the years grown from its traditional identity as a major electronics trading centre to become an important contributor to economic growth, employment generation, innovation and technological development.

He said the market’s expanding profile was evidence of the capacity of Nigerian entrepreneurs to build globally competitive businesses when provided with the right environment and opportunities.

Musa particularly welcomed initiatives within the market aimed at strengthening quality assurance, promoting locally manufactured products and reducing the circulation of counterfeit goods.

He said such measures were critical to building consumer confidence, protecting legitimate businesses and positioning Alaba as a trusted commercial destination capable of attracting customers and investors from across Nigeria and other African countries.

The Defence Minister stressed that the growth and sustainability of businesses could not be separated from the issue of national security, noting that a peaceful and secure environment was essential for economic activities to flourish.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to creating an environment in which businesses, investors, manufacturers and entrepreneurs could operate safely and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Musa also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for what he described as his commitment to national security and economic stability.

He said sustainable economic development required a strong partnership between government, the private sector and citizens, adding that businesses could only achieve their full potential when security, infrastructure and enterprise worked together.

The Minister urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs operating within the Alaba business community to sustain their culture of innovation, integrity and excellence.

He challenged them to continue raising standards in the electronics and technology sector while supporting local production and creating opportunities for younger Nigerians.

According to him, the success of Alaba should serve as an inspiration to other business communities across the country, demonstrating that Nigerian enterprises could compete effectively in an increasingly globalised economy.

He said the market had an important role to play in Nigeria’s ambition to strengthen its technology ecosystem, promote entrepreneurship and create sustainable employment opportunities.

The gala and award night also featured the recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and growth of Alaba International Market.

Musa congratulated the entire Alaba business community on what he described as a historic milestone, expressing optimism that the transformation would usher in greater opportunities and further strengthen the market’s position within Nigeria and across the African continent.

In his remarks, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, commended the Alaba International Market community for its contribution to the economic development of Lagos State.

The governor described the market as strategically important to commerce, innovation and employment generation, acknowledging the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of traders and business owners who have sustained its growth over the years.

Sanwo-Olu said the activities of the Alaba business community had contributed significantly to the state’s commercial strength and enhanced Lagos’ reputation as a major economic centre.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the reconstruction of the road linking the Alaba International Market, noting that improved road infrastructure would enhance accessibility to the market and further improve the ease of doing business.

According to him, the road project would facilitate the movement of people and goods, reduce logistical challenges and stimulate additional economic activities within the area.

The governor’s representative further assured the business community that the state government would continue to support initiatives capable of strengthening commerce, infrastructure and economic development across Lagos.

The event also highlighted the long-standing relationship between the Alaba business community and the Nigerian Army.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the International Market Association Electronics has maintained a cordial relationship with the Nigerian Army spanning several decades.

The relationship, the ministry noted, was initially brokered by Gen. Musa when he was a young military officer, underscoring the long-standing ties between the Defence Minister and the Alaba business community.

The renewed focus on cooperation between the market community and security institutions was described as significant, particularly in view of the importance of security to the protection of businesses, investments, infrastructure and economic activities.

The unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba” therefore marks not only a physical transformation of one of Nigeria’s best-known commercial centres but also a renewed commitment by stakeholders to reposition the market as a modern, secure and competitive hub for electronics, technology and entrepreneurship.

With the combined efforts of the market leadership, Lagos State Government, Federal Government and other stakeholders, expectations are high that the transformation will further enhance Alaba International Market’s contribution to employment, local manufacturing, technology development and Nigeria’s wider economic growth.

The event ended with renewed calls for stakeholders within the Alaba business community to maintain high standards, promote legitimate trade and embrace innovation as the market seeks to consolidate its position as one of Africa’s leading commercial and technology destinations.
