Defence Minister Unveils South-East Basketball Championship, Donates ₦2 Million to Abia Youth Camp.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has unveiled plans for a South-East Regional Basketball Championship as part of efforts to discover, develop and harness the enormous sporting potential of young people across the region.
The initiative, according to the Minister, is designed to provide a structured platform for identifying talented young basketball players while promoting youth engagement, discipline, national unity and social development through sports.
General Musa made the announcement at the Umuahia Township Stadium at the end of his three-day official working visit to Abia State, where he visited participants of the inaugural multi-age basketball camp organised by the Crossover Foundation in collaboration with renowned Nigerian basketball stars, the Achiuwa brothers, and supported by the Abia State Government.
The Defence Minister, who spent time interacting with the young athletes and coaches, commended the organisers for investing in grassroots sports development and creating opportunities for children and young people to develop their talents.
He described the basketball camp as a commendable initiative capable of transforming lives, reducing youth restiveness and providing a pathway for aspiring athletes to achieve their dreams on both national and international stages.
Announcing the establishment of the South-East Regional Basketball Championship, General Musa said the tournament would bring together talented players from the five South-East states in an annual competition aimed at discovering future basketball stars and strengthening regional integration through sports.
He noted that the championship would serve as a talent development platform where outstanding players could be identified and nurtured for higher levels of competition while encouraging healthy rivalry, teamwork and excellence among participants.
In a demonstration of his commitment to youth empowerment through sports, the Defence Minister announced an immediate donation of ₦2 million to support the operations of the ongoing basketball camp.
He expressed confidence that the financial support would assist the organisers in expanding the programme and providing better facilities and opportunities for the participating youths.
General Musa, an avid basketball enthusiast himself, urged parents and guardians to encourage their children to actively participate in organised sporting activities, stressing that sports remain one of the most effective tools for character building, discipline, leadership development and national cohesion.
According to him, engaging young people in sports not only promotes healthy living but also helps instil values such as teamwork, resilience, patriotism and respect for constituted authority.
The Minister further disclosed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria would soon embark on targeted sports recruitment programmes aimed at identifying exceptionally talented young athletes and providing them with career opportunities within the military.
He explained that the initiative would enable gifted sportsmen and women to combine their athletic careers with national service, while contributing to the country’s sporting success and national security.
General Musa reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to initiatives that empower young Nigerians, promote peace and create productive opportunities capable of steering youths away from crime and other social vices.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a signed basketball to the Defence Minister by National Basketball Association (NBA) player Precious Achiuwa on behalf of the organisers, in appreciation of his support for youth development and grassroots sports.
The gesture symbolised a growing partnership between government, private organisations and members of the Nigerian diaspora in advancing sports development and creating brighter opportunities for the nation’s young talents.
Observers believe the proposed South-East Regional Basketball Championship could become a major platform for discovering future national and international basketball stars while strengthening unity and fostering positive engagement among youths across the region.
