The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commenced a three-day stocktake meeting aimed at strengthening its institutional preparedness for Nigeria’s forthcoming Mutual Evaluation Exercise on Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Proliferation Financing (ML/TF/PF).

The meeting, which began on Monday, September 14, 2026, is being held at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja and will run through September 16.

The exercise brings together relevant departments, units and specialised teams of the Commission to undertake a comprehensive review of preparations, assess progress made so far and identify areas requiring further attention ahead of the national evaluation.

The stocktake is also designed to enhance internal coordination and ensure that the Commission is adequately positioned to contribute effectively to Nigeria’s overall preparedness for the Mutual Evaluation Exercise.

The Mutual Evaluation Exercise is an important assessment of a country’s framework for preventing and combating money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing. It examines not only the existence of relevant laws, policies and institutions but also the effectiveness of measures put in place to identify, investigate and prosecute financial crimes and disrupt illicit financial flows.

For Nigeria, the exercise provides an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of its anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism framework, while also highlighting areas where further institutional and operational improvements may be required.

At the ICPC meeting, participating departments and teams are expected to review relevant areas of their mandates, evaluate the level of implementation of existing measures and strengthen the documentation and coordination required to support Nigeria’s response to the evaluation process.

The Commission’s preparations are particularly significant given its mandate to investigate and prosecute corruption-related offences, as well as prevent corrupt practices and strengthen integrity within public institutions.

Effective collaboration among law enforcement, financial intelligence, regulatory and other relevant government agencies remains critical to addressing the complex financial networks that facilitate corruption, money laundering, terrorist financing and other forms of illicit financing.

The three-day stocktake is therefore expected to provide an avenue for ICPC officials to consolidate institutional knowledge, address identified gaps and establish a coordinated approach to issues that may arise during the Mutual Evaluation Exercise.

The meeting will also enable the participating units to take stock of progress and ensure that relevant information, records and institutional processes are properly aligned with the requirements of the evaluation.

The ICPC’s move underscores the importance of institutional readiness in Nigeria’s broader efforts to strengthen its financial crime control architecture and protect the country’s financial system from abuse.

As the country prepares for the evaluation, effective implementation of existing measures, inter-agency cooperation and demonstrable enforcement outcomes will remain crucial to Nigeria’s ability to meet international standards in combating money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing.

The stocktake meeting, which ends on September 16, is expected to further strengthen the Commission’s contribution to Nigeria’s national preparedness and reinforce its role in the country’s fight against corruption and other forms of financial crime.
