Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence and security cooperation, with senior officials from both countries holding high-level talks in Washington, D.C., on counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and enhanced military collaboration.

The engagement was led on the Nigerian side by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, who joined other senior government and military officials for strategic discussions with authorities of the United States Department of War.

The high-level meeting, held at the Pentagon, formed part of efforts to deepen the long-standing military-to-military relationship between Nigeria and the United States and develop stronger operational mechanisms to address terrorism and other emerging security threats confronting Nigeria, the West African region and the wider international community.

General Musa was accompanied by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Parker Udiandeye; and other senior officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

The Nigerian delegation engaged senior officials of the United States Department of War, led by Julia Sokol, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs.

The discussions represented a continuation of the United States-Nigeria Joint Working Group Defence Bilateral Talks, with both sides examining areas of mutual interest, including intelligence cooperation, shared security architecture, counter-terrorism operations and improved operational coordination.

The talks also underscored the importance of closer collaboration between the two countries at a time when Nigeria continues to confront terrorism, insurgency and other complex security challenges.

The Nigerian delegation’s participation formed part of a broader diplomatic mission led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who was in the United States alongside other senior government officials for the second meeting of the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group held from August 12 to 13, 2026.

The Joint Working Group meeting was co-chaired by Ribadu and Allison Hooker, the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the meeting reviewed progress made on previously identified areas of cooperation and examined strategic frameworks for strengthening bilateral relations.

Particular attention was also given to Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), with both sides reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue and mutual engagement in addressing the issues surrounding the designation.

The discussions highlighted the shared interest of Nigeria and the United States in confronting global and regional security threats through closer cooperation, respect for national interests and stronger institutional partnerships.

The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining dialogue and building a strategic alliance capable of responding effectively to evolving security challenges.

The latest engagement is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the Nigerian Armed Forces and their American counterparts, particularly in areas requiring enhanced intelligence coordination, professional military engagement and joint approaches to counter-terrorism.

For Nigeria, the strengthened partnership comes as the country continues efforts to improve its national security architecture and strengthen the capacity of its armed forces to confront terrorism and other threats to national stability.

The Washington talks also provided an opportunity for senior Nigerian economic and security officials to participate in discussions that link national security with broader economic and strategic interests.

The Ministry of Defence said the engagements reflected the determination of both governments to sustain constructive dialogue and develop practical areas of cooperation in the interest of regional and international security.

The meeting further demonstrated the importance attached by Nigeria and the United States to their bilateral defence relationship and their shared objective of confronting threats that transcend national borders.

The Nigerian government has continued to seek stronger international partnerships as part of its broader strategy to enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces and improve cooperation with foreign partners in the fight against terrorism.

The Washington engagement is therefore expected to contribute to a more coordinated approach to security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, while creating additional platforms for sustained military and diplomatic engagement.

The Ministry of Defence said the Nigerian delegation’s participation in the talks underscored the country’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and pursuing mutually beneficial solutions to contemporary security challenges.

The engagement marks another significant step in the ongoing Nigeria-US security partnership, with both countries signalling their readiness to deepen cooperation in the fight against terrorism and other threats to regional and global peace.
