The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to unveil a comprehensive update on its preparations for the 2027 General Election as the country enters the crucial 100-day countdown to the polls.
The electoral commission will on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja, where it is expected to provide updates on critical aspects of the electoral process, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures being put in place to safeguard the credibility and integrity of the elections.
The event, according to INEC, is designed to strengthen transparency, public communication and collaboration among the major stakeholders in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the commission said the engagement would provide an opportunity to brief Nigerians and other stakeholders on the level of its preparedness for the elections.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, to mark 100 days to the 2027 General Election.
“The Commission will provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement said.
The conference will be addressed by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, alongside other key stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
The commission said the national stakeholders’ meeting was part of its efforts to maintain an open line of communication with political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, the media and other actors whose roles are critical to the success of the elections.
According to INEC, the engagement underscores its commitment to “absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem.”
Expected at the meeting are leaders of registered political parties, security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations, election observer groups, disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives.
The broad participation is expected to provide an avenue for stakeholders to raise concerns, seek clarification and strengthen cooperation with the commission ahead of the elections.
The meeting comes at a critical period in the nation’s electoral calendar, with preparations for the 2027 General Election entering an advanced stage.
Under the timetable released by INEC, the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to hold on March 6, 2027.
The commission has also outlined a series of activities leading to the elections, including political party primaries, nomination of candidates and other statutory pre-election processes.
With the 100-day milestone approaching, attention is expected to intensify on the commission’s readiness to conduct elections that meet constitutional and legal requirements while addressing concerns surrounding electoral logistics, voter registration, accessibility, security and public confidence.
Prof. Amupitan, who assumed office as INEC Chairman in October 2025, has repeatedly emphasised the commission’s responsibility to conduct free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections.
The October 6 engagement will therefore provide an important platform for the commission to communicate directly with Nigerians and the international community on its preparations, while also reinforcing cooperation among institutions and organisations involved in the electoral process.
The event is scheduled to take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja and is expected to commence at 10 a.m.
INEC said attendance at the event would be strictly by invitation, adding that accredited media representatives and invited guests would be required to present their invitation cards or accreditation badges at designated security checkpoints.
To ensure wider public access to the proceedings, the commission said the event would be broadcast live on major national television networks and streamed through its official social media platforms.
The commission’s latest engagement is expected to set the tone for the final phase of preparations for the 2027 elections, with political parties, candidates, security agencies, civil society groups, observer missions and voters increasingly turning their attention to the conduct and credibility of the polls.
As the countdown begins, stakeholders are expected to use the forum to strengthen collaboration and address emerging challenges, with the ultimate objective of ensuring that the 2027 elections are conducted in a peaceful, transparent, credible and inclusive manner.
