The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and the Chartered Institute of Directors, Nigeria (CIoD) have explored opportunities for deeper collaboration aimed at strengthening corporate governance, leadership practices and organisational performance.

The discussions took place when a delegation of the CIoD, led by the Chairman of its Abuja Zone, Rose Eshiett, paid a visit to NNPC Towers, where the delegation was received by the company’s Executive Vice President, Business Services, Sophia Mbakwe.

The engagement focused on areas of mutual interest and opportunities for the two organisations to work together in advancing shared professional and organisational objectives.

At the meeting, both parties emphasised the importance of sound corporate governance and effective leadership in building strong, resilient and sustainable organisations.

Corporate governance has increasingly become a critical component of organisational success, particularly for large institutions operating in complex and highly regulated environments. Effective governance structures provide a framework for accountability, transparency, responsible decision-making and strategic oversight, while strong leadership helps organisations translate these principles into sustainable performance.

Against this backdrop, the engagement between NNPC Ltd. and the CIoD underscores the growing importance of professional development and high standards of board and executive leadership in strengthening institutional effectiveness.

The discussions also highlighted the potential value of closer professional collaboration between the two organisations. Such collaboration could provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, capacity development and the promotion of recognised best practices in corporate leadership and governance.

For NNPC Ltd., strengthening governance and leadership practices is particularly significant given the company’s strategic position within Nigeria’s energy sector and the broad responsibilities associated with managing a major national energy institution.

The company’s engagement with the CIoD therefore provides an avenue for further conversations around professional standards and governance practices that can support organisational effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

The CIoD, as the professional body for directors in Nigeria, plays an important role in promoting professional competence among directors and supporting improved standards of board practice. The institute provides training and certification programmes designed to strengthen directors’ knowledge and capacity in corporate governance and leadership.

Its mandate is anchored on the recognition that competent and well-equipped directors are essential to the effective functioning of corporate boards and the long-term success of organisations.

The visit to NNPC Towers consequently represents an opportunity to build stronger institutional links between a major player in Nigeria’s energy industry and a professional organisation focused on developing the country’s corporate leadership and governance capacity.

The emphasis placed by both sides on sustainable organisational performance also reflects the increasing recognition that corporate success goes beyond short-term financial or operational outcomes. Strong governance, ethical leadership, competent boards and continuous professional development are important elements in creating organisations capable of delivering sustained value.

As businesses and institutions navigate an increasingly complex operating environment, the need for leaders who understand governance principles and can effectively provide strategic oversight has become more pronounced.

The engagement between NNPC Ltd. and the CIoD could therefore serve as a platform for further cooperation in areas that promote leadership excellence, institutional accountability and sustainable organisational development.

The meeting ended with both parties reiterating the importance of continued engagement and collaboration in advancing their shared professional and organisational objectives.

The development also reinforces the broader role that professional institutions such as the CIoD can play in supporting organisations as they seek to strengthen governance frameworks, improve leadership capacity and achieve sustainable performance.

For NNPC Ltd., continued engagement with professional bodies focused on governance and leadership could complement its organisational efforts by providing access to specialised expertise and contemporary perspectives on board practice and corporate leadership.

Ultimately, the discussions between the two organisations point to a shared understanding that effective governance and leadership remain central to building institutions that are accountable, professionally managed and capable of delivering sustainable results.
