Nigeria is set to take centre stage in global climate governance as it prepares to host the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting 2026, a landmark international gathering that will bring together the world’s foremost leaders in weather, water and climate services for the first time on African soil. The three-day meeting, scheduled to hold from October 13 to 15, 2026, at Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, is being hosted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) following an invitation extended by the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The high-profile event is expected to attract the leadership of the World Meteorological Organization, representatives of the Alliance for Hydromet Development’s 17 member institutions, senior government officials, ministers, development partners, multilateral development banks, climate finance institutions, United Nations agencies, regional and continental organizations, private sector leaders, researchers, academics and end-users of weather, water and climate services from across the world.

The annual meeting will be held under the theme, “Partnerships, Innovation and Sustainable Investment in Weather, Water and Climate Services,” reflecting the growing global recognition of hydrometeorological services as essential tools for sustainable development, disaster preparedness and climate resilience. The event marks a significant milestone for both Nigeria and the African continent, as it will be the first time the Alliance for Hydromet Development’s flagship annual meeting will be hosted in Africa.

The development is widely regarded as a recognition of Nigeria’s growing leadership in strengthening meteorological and hydrological services and advancing climate resilience initiatives across the continent. Experts say the meeting comes at a critical period when countries around the world are facing increasing threats from climate change, extreme weather events, flooding, drought, food insecurity and environmental degradation. It is expected to provide a strategic platform for global leaders to deliberate on practical solutions for improving weather forecasting, climate services, water resource management and disaster risk reduction. According to the organisers, discussions will focus on mobilising investments that will strengthen national meteorological and hydrological institutions while improving access to accurate and timely weather, water and climate information that supports socioeconomic development. Participants are also expected to explore strategies for expanding partnerships among governments, development institutions, financial organizations and the private sector in order to bridge existing funding gaps in hydrometeorological infrastructure and services. The meeting will equally highlight the importance of weather, water and climate services in promoting food and nutrition security, sustainable agriculture, water resources management, aviation safety, renewable energy development, public health, environmental protection and community resilience against climate-related disasters. As host nation, Nigeria intends to showcase its progress in modernising meteorological services through the Nigerian Meteorological Agency. The country will serve as a practical case study on how strong political commitment, strategic partnerships and coordinated investments can strengthen national hydrometeorological systems while easing the financial burden on government through collaborative funding mechanisms. The Annual Meeting has been structured around five strategic pillars designed to guide future global investments and cooperation in hydrometeorology. These include strengthening partnerships and coordination within the Alliance, mobilising sustainable investments, promoting innovation through public-private partnerships, delivering user-centred weather and climate services, and building sustainable national hydrometeorological institutions capable of responding to future climate challenges. The organisers believe these pillars will help deepen international collaboration while accelerating the delivery of modern weather and climate services that support sustainable economic growth and protect vulnerable communities. Speaking ahead of the event, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organization, described the meeting as a major opportunity for Nigeria to contribute to global efforts aimed at strengthening climate resilience. He noted that under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), who will serve as the Chief Host, Nigeria is committed to advancing international cooperation in weather, water and climate services. According to Professor Anosike, hosting the Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting underscores Nigeria’s commitment to promoting the strategic importance of weather, water and climate services in reducing risks to national, regional and global socioeconomic activities. He said the meeting would further position Nigeria as a leading voice in Africa on hydrometeorological development while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, technological innovation, investment partnerships and institutional strengthening. Beyond its significance for climate governance, analysts believe the conference will also provide economic and diplomatic benefits for Nigeria by attracting hundreds of international delegates to Lagos, strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and showcasing the country’s growing capacity to host major global events. With governments increasingly relying on accurate weather and climate information to support agriculture, aviation, transportation, disaster management, health systems and infrastructure planning, the Lagos meeting is expected to shape future global investments and policy directions in hydrometeorological services. Further details on the event, organisers said, will be released through the official communication channels of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency as preparations gather momentum for what is expected to be one of the most significant global climate and weather gatherings of 2026.
