Customs Unit Recovers N2bn, Intercepts 21,000 Bags of Smuggled Rice

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, has recovered goods and other proceeds valued at more than N2 billion and intercepted about 21,000 bags of smuggled rice during its anti-smuggling operations in the last nine months.

The development underscores the continued efforts of the Customs Service to curb smuggling, protect legitimate businesses and strengthen government revenue through intensified border and anti-smuggling operations.

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, is responsible for conducting anti-smuggling operations across areas within its operational jurisdiction, particularly along routes identified as vulnerable to the movement of prohibited and improperly imported goods.

The interception of the rice consignments forms part of the unit’s sustained crackdown on the illegal importation of food products, which Customs authorities have repeatedly identified as a threat to domestic production and the country’s economic interests.

The seizure of about 21,000 bags of rice also highlights the scale of the activities of smugglers who seek to circumvent established import procedures and bring goods into the country through unauthorised routes.

According to the Customs Service, anti-smuggling operations are aimed not only at preventing revenue leakages but also at ensuring compliance with the nation’s trade laws and protecting local industries and businesses that operate within the legal framework.

The N2 billion recovery represents the value of various seizures and recoveries made by the unit during the nine-month period. The operations involved intelligence-driven surveillance, interception of suspected smuggling activities and enforcement actions against individuals and networks involved in the illicit movement of goods.

The Customs Service has continued to deploy intelligence gathering, patrol operations and collaboration with other security and border-management agencies in tackling smuggling.

The intensified operations have also focused on major transportation corridors and border routes where smugglers are believed to exploit difficult terrain and alternative routes to evade Customs checkpoints.

The seizure of the rice consignments is particularly significant amid efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen food security and encourage domestic agricultural production.

Rice remains one of Nigeria’s major staple foods, and the illegal importation of the commodity has been a longstanding concern for government agencies because of its potential impact on local farmers, rice processors and legitimate importers.

Customs authorities have consistently maintained that legitimate trade remains welcome, but importers are expected to comply with the country’s laws, regulations and applicable duties.

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, has therefore continued to intensify its enforcement activities while urging members of the public to provide useful information on suspected smuggling activities.

The latest seizures demonstrate the agency’s continuing efforts to secure Nigeria’s borders, prevent illicit trade and support the Federal Government’s broader economic and food-security objectives.

The Customs Service is expected to sustain the operations as part of its mandate to protect Nigeria’s economic interests and ensure that goods entering or leaving the country comply with applicable laws.
