In Nigeria’s public service, where leadership is often tested by the demands of responsibility, security challenges and the need for sound institutional management, the career of Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, OFR, mni stands out as a blend of scholarship, professional discipline, administrative experience and commitment to national service.

Born on September 30, 1967, into the family of Suleiman Audi, an Islamic cleric in Laminga Town, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Prof. Audi’s journey from a modest background to the leadership of one of Nigeria’s foremost security agencies is a story of perseverance, continuous learning and dedication to duty.

His career trajectory, spanning several decades, reflects a deliberate investment in education and professional development, alongside extensive practical experience in security administration, intelligence, procurement, operations, disaster management and public policy.

Prof. Audi began his formal education at Kofar Kudu Primary School, Nasarawa, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1981.

Determined to pursue a career in education and public service, he proceeded to Government Teachers’ College, Jengre, Plateau State, where he obtained a Teachers’ Grade II Certificate in 1987.

His academic journey continued at the College of Education, Akwanga, where he obtained the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in 1992.

Rather than stopping at the attainment of a teaching qualification, Audi continued to broaden his academic horizon. In 1995, he enrolled at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical and Health Education.

Upon completing his undergraduate studies, he participated in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps programme and passed out in 1996.

His growing interest in public administration and governance subsequently led him to the University of Calabar, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration in 2001.

His academic pursuit did not end there. Driven by what has consistently been described as a strong desire for excellence and professional specialisation, he proceeded to Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Public Administration, specialising in Public Policy Analysis, in 2014.

His pursuit of higher education was complemented by another significant qualification when he obtained a Master in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (MLCJ) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2019.

The breadth of his academic training — spanning education, physical and health education, public administration, public policy, law enforcement and criminal justice — has provided a multidisciplinary foundation for his career in security management and public service.

Prof. Audi’s professional journey with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) began in November 1996, when he joined the organisation as a volunteer.

Following his basic officers’ training in 1997, he was deployed as a Divisional Officer in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The young officer subsequently served as Divisional Officer in Lafia Division between 1998 and 2000, gaining frontline experience in security administration and community-level operations.

In July 2000, he was redeployed to the Nasarawa State Command Headquarters, where he served as Acting Head of Operations.

His responsibilities expanded further in May 2001 when he became Head of the Intelligence Department of the Nasarawa State Command.

In 2002, Audi was appointed Head of Administration and Command 2i/c, a position that gave him additional exposure to institutional administration and command responsibilities.

His growing professional profile saw him deployed to Yobe State Command in 2006, where he served as Deputy Commandant and 2i/c until 2007.

A major milestone in Audi’s career came in 2007 when he was promoted to the rank of Commandant of Corps and deployed to the Office of the Commandant General at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.

There, he served as Commandant, Administration, with responsibility for policy matters until 2009.

In 2009, he was moved to the Procurement Department, where he served as Commandant, Procurement, until 2014.

His experience in procurement and administrative management became another important component of his professional portfolio, particularly given the growing importance of transparency, accountability and strategic resource management in public institutions.

Between 2014 and 2015, Audi served as Commandant of the NSCDC Imo State Command.

He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Assistant Commandant General (ACG) and redeployed to the National Headquarters as Director of Procurement, where he served until 2016.

For a security institution operating in an increasingly complex environment, technical security knowledge alone is not sufficient. Strategic thinking, public policy understanding and institutional leadership are equally important.

Recognising this, Audi further broadened his leadership capacity through training at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, where he participated in the Senior Executive Course 38 in 2016.

His training at NIPSS was particularly significant, exposing him to advanced policy and strategic thinking and further strengthening his understanding of national security, governance and development.

Following the training, he was posted to the NSCDC Training College in Katsina, where he served as College Provost from December 2016 to October 2018.

The assignment placed him in a strategic position to contribute to the training and professional development of personnel within the Corps.

Before his appointment as Commandant General, Audi served as Zonal Commander, NSCDC Zone ‘C’ Headquarters, Bauchi, with responsibility for the North-East states.

His progression through different commands and departments gave him experience across a wide range of operational and administrative areas — from frontline command and intelligence to policy, procurement, training and zonal coordination.

Another defining feature of Audi’s professional development has been his participation in several local and international training programmes.

In 2008, he attended programmes at the University of Teesside, England, United Kingdom, focusing on issues including global anti-fraud, corruption in the public and private sectors, economic crime, money laundering, identity theft and crime reduction methods.

He also participated in a course on Combating Corruption in Procurement Practice in London, as well as a Performance and Accountability Course in Dubai.

His professional development also included training in Modern Tactics and Strategies of Combating Infrastructure Crime in 2011.

In 2012, he attended training in Russia on Modern Tactics and Techniques in Disaster Management, further expanding his understanding of emergency response and disaster management.

He also underwent Arms and Weapon Handling Training at the National Intelligence Agency in Abuja in 2012.

Earlier, in 2006, he attended a Senior Management Course at the Prisons Staff Training College, Lagos.

These programmes exposed him to international approaches to security, public-sector accountability, crime prevention, infrastructure protection and emergency management.

For Audi, education has not merely been a collection of certificates but a means of strengthening his capacity for public service.

The combination of academic qualifications and practical professional training has enabled him to operate across different dimensions of security administration.

Among the honours associated with his career is a Distinguished Merit Award for Excellence in Administration and Security Operations by the Institute of Industrialists and Corporate Administration of Nigeria.

He is also a member of prestigious professional bodies and holds the designation mni — Member of the National Institute, following his participation in the Senior Executive Course at NIPSS.

He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Security and Forensic Studies, Nigeria.

These recognitions underline his standing within the broader professional and security community.
