EPL: Alonso Demands Defensive Improvement as Chelsea’s Clean-Sheet Drought Continues

Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, has called on his players to improve their defensive organisation and become more solid after the Blues were held to a 2-2 draw by Hull in the Premier League.

The result extended Chelsea’s worrying defensive record, with the London club conceding at least two goals in each of their opening four league matches. The Blues have also now gone 20 Premier League games without keeping a clean sheet.

Chelsea appeared to be on course for victory after taking the lead through Morgan Rogers, but Hull fought back to level the scores.

Joao Pedro restored Chelsea’s advantage in the second half, only for Mohamed Belloumi to score his second goal of the game and secure a valuable point for the visitors at Stamford Bridge.

The draw left Alonso frustrated, with the Chelsea manager admitting that his side had failed to defend well enough and ultimately deserved the result.

“We had one or two good chances to get the winner, but you’re still open. Not happy. We can do better. We got what we deserved,” Alonso said.

The former Spain international also criticised Chelsea’s inability to maintain control after taking the lead, stressing that the team must show greater concentration and defensive discipline.

“We need to be more solid and be more controlled. When we get the lead, you still need to be competing and not to give the chance so easily for them to come back,” he added.

Chelsea’s defensive shortcomings were once again exposed by individual errors and poor organisation.

Jorrel Hato misjudged a cross in the build-up to Hull’s first goal, while Belloumi’s second came after Chelsea failed to properly clear a corner, allowing the visitors to punish the hosts.

Former Wales and Premier League defender Ashley Williams also criticised Chelsea’s defensive structure, particularly their vulnerability when possession changes hands.

“Chelsea are all over the place in transitions. When they lose the ball, they are wide open,” Williams said.

He added that the goals conceded by the Blues were the result of basic defensive mistakes involving both individual players and the team as a whole.

“The goals they conceded are just basic errors. Both individually and as a defensive unit, they are so far off it and are shipping goals,” Williams said.

Chelsea’s attacking performance, however, has remained a major source of encouragement. The Blues have continued to create chances and score goals, with Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro among those making important contributions in the final third.

Alonso acknowledged the contrast between Chelsea’s attacking and defensive performances, admitting that the team is currently showing a significant imbalance.

“Overall, I think that we are attacking better than defending in every part,” the Chelsea boss said.

The Spaniard also explained his decision to line up with a back four against Hull, insisting that the tactical setup was based on the qualities and profiles of the players available to him rather than simply an attempt to address the team’s defensive problems.

“It’s about the profile of the players. You can say it was back three or four, so it’s about the choice of the players, their qualities,” Alonso explained.

The latest defensive setback will increase pressure on Alonso to find a solution to Chelsea’s vulnerability at the back, particularly with the Premier League season gathering momentum.

While the team has demonstrated considerable attacking potential, the inability to protect leads and prevent opponents from scoring continues to undermine its results.

For Chelsea, the immediate priority will therefore be to strike a better balance between attack and defence. Alonso’s message is clear: entertaining attacking football alone will not be enough if the team continues to concede goals through individual mistakes, poor transitions and lapses in concentration.

The Blues will now look to strengthen their defensive discipline and end their lengthy clean-sheet drought as they seek to turn their attacking promise into more consistent Premier League victories.
