By Julius Peter, Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has visited Niger State following the deaths of 37 suspected miners in police custody, assuring the state government and the families of the deceased that the Nigeria Police Force would conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Disu, who visited the state as part of efforts to ascertain the circumstances that led to the deaths, said the police would establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that all relevant issues were properly examined.

The deaths have generated concerns among the public and prompted calls for transparency over the circumstances in which the suspected miners died while in custody.

During his visit, the Inspector-General was expected to engage with relevant state authorities and other stakeholders as part of efforts to clarify the sequence of events leading to the deaths.

The police leadership said the investigation would be comprehensive and guided by due process, with relevant individuals and circumstances examined to determine what transpired.

The development comes amid broader concerns over the treatment, welfare and safety of persons held in custody, particularly suspects who are yet to be convicted by a court of law.

The IGP’s visit also underscores the police authorities’ response to the concerns generated by the incident and the need to provide credible answers to the families of the deceased and the wider public.

The deaths reportedly involved suspected miners who had been taken into police custody in connection with mining-related activities. Details surrounding their arrest, detention, subsequent health conditions and deaths are expected to form part of the investigation.

Disu assured that the police would not treat the matter lightly, stressing the importance of establishing the facts through a proper investigative process.

He also conveyed the commitment of the police authorities to ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the deaths were thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action would follow the outcome of the investigation.

The incident has further highlighted the complex security and regulatory challenges associated with illegal mining activities in parts of the country, where authorities have continued to intensify efforts to curb activities considered harmful to national security, the environment and local communities.

However, security operations against suspected illegal miners have also raised questions about due process, detention conditions and the protection of the rights of suspects in custody.

For the families of the deceased, the investigation is expected to provide clarity on how their relatives died and whether there were any failures or misconduct that contributed to the deaths.

The police investigation is therefore likely to examine the circumstances of the arrests and detention, the condition of the suspects while in custody, the actions taken by officers responsible for their welfare, medical attention provided to them, and the circumstances immediately preceding their deaths.

The outcome of the investigation could determine whether disciplinary, administrative or legal measures are required against any person found to have violated the law or police regulations.

The Niger State visit by the IGP is coming at a time when authorities are seeking to strengthen accountability within security agencies and ensure that allegations involving persons in custody are subjected to appropriate scrutiny.

Disu’s assurance of a thorough investigation is expected to reassure stakeholders that the deaths will receive the necessary attention and that the findings will guide any further action by the police and other relevant authorities.

The police authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
