NNPC Retail has commissioned its first technology-powered self-service smart station in Abuja, signalling a major shift in the company’s retail operations and marking a new phase in the development of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry.

The facility, located along Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, is designed to provide motorists and other consumers with faster, more convenient and technology-driven access to energy and mobility services.

The commissioning represents part of NNPC Retail’s efforts to modernise its retail network and transform conventional filling stations into integrated energy, mobility and lifestyle destinations capable of responding to changing consumer expectations.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd., Dr. Mumuni Dagazau, described the facility as a reflection of NNPC Retail’s commitment to innovation, operational efficiency, convenience and improved customer experience.

Dagazau commended the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for providing the land and supporting the partnership that enabled the development of the smart station.

He said the project demonstrated the importance of collaboration and innovation in creating modern infrastructure capable of delivering improved services to Nigerians.

The facility operates 24 hours a day and introduces self-service fuel dispensing, allowing customers to independently complete transactions and dispense the exact quantity of fuel they require.

The self-service model is expected to provide customers with greater control over their transactions while reducing waiting time and improving the overall efficiency of fuel purchases.

The Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Mr. Huub Stokman, said the facility reflected the changing dynamics of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry and the company’s determination to align its retail operations with evolving consumer expectations.

According to Stokman, consumers increasingly demand quality, convenience, speed and reliable service, adding that NNPC Retail is responding to these demands by investing in technology and innovative retail solutions.

He explained that the smart station goes beyond traditional fuel dispensing by bringing together a range of energy, automotive and lifestyle services within a single location.

Among the facilities available at the station are electric vehicle charging points, an automated car wash, a lubricant service bay and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dispensing facilities.

The station also provides other lifestyle offerings aimed at making it a convenient destination for motorists and other customers.

NNPC Retail further disclosed plans to expand the station’s energy solutions to include compressed natural gas (CNG), underscoring the company’s broader interest in diversifying its energy offerings and responding to developments in Nigeria’s evolving energy mix.

The introduction of electric vehicle charging infrastructure alongside conventional petroleum products and other energy solutions also points to an emerging retail model in which filling stations serve multiple energy and mobility needs.

The Abuja smart station is therefore positioned not merely as a conventional petrol station, but as an integrated platform where customers can access different energy, automotive and lifestyle services.

The initiative comes as operators in Nigeria’s downstream sector increasingly seek to improve efficiency, embrace technology and develop new business models in response to changing market conditions and consumer preferences.

For NNPC Retail, the commissioning is part of a wider drive to modernise its retail network and establish a more customer-focused service culture across its operations.

The company said the smart station would provide a model for the transformation of its conventional retail outlets into technology-enabled facilities that offer a wider range of services to customers.

The self-service component is also expected to introduce greater flexibility into fuel purchases, particularly for customers who prefer quick transactions and minimal interaction during refuelling.

With the facility operating round-the-clock, motorists can access its services at any time of the day, further enhancing convenience for residents, commuters and travellers using the Airport Road corridor.

The strategic location along Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, also places the facility within a major transportation corridor serving Abuja and providing access to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

The partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Service, which provided the land for the project, highlights the role of inter-agency collaboration in developing infrastructure and improving public-facing services.

The commissioning consequently marks a significant milestone in NNPC Retail’s efforts to redefine the traditional filling station model and introduce a more technologically advanced retail experience.

As Nigeria’s energy landscape continues to evolve, the integration of petroleum products, LPG, electric vehicle charging and planned CNG services could position smart stations as important components of the country’s emerging multi-energy retail ecosystem.

NNPC Retail said it would continue to explore innovative solutions that enhance customer satisfaction, improve operational efficiency and provide convenient access to energy and mobility services.

The company’s latest initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar developments across the country as NNPC Retail pursues its ambition of creating modern, efficient and customer-centric retail destinations.

The commissioning of the Abuja facility therefore represents more than the opening of another filling station; it signals NNPC Retail’s move towards a future in which technology, multiple energy options, mobility services and customer convenience are integrated into Nigeria’s downstream retail infrastructure.
