Leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have intensified consultations ahead of the unveiling of the party’s campaign council for the 2027 general elections, with the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi; his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; and National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, holding another marathon meeting in Abuja.
The meeting, which lasted several hours on Wednesday at the Abuja residence of Senator Dickson, was attended by the NDC presidential flag bearer, Obi; his running mate, Kwankwaso; National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas Zuwoghe; the two Deputy National Chairmen; and other senior officials of the party.
The meeting was said to have focused largely on reviewing and fine-tuning key decisions ahead of the formal unveiling of the NDC Presidential Campaign Council as the party steps up preparations for the 2027 elections.
The latest meeting is part of a series of high-level consultations involving the party’s leading figures in recent weeks, particularly the increasingly frequent engagements between Dickson, Obi and Kwankwaso.
The trio had reportedly held another lengthy meeting on Monday before Wednesday’s expanded session involving other members of the party’s leadership.
Sources close to the party said the consultations were aimed at ensuring that the various structures and strategic decisions required for the commencement of the NDC’s nationwide campaign are properly coordinated before the campaign council is unveiled.
The discussions are also expected to cover campaign organisation, coordination between the national and state structures, mobilisation of party members and supporters, as well as strategies for presenting the NDC’s candidates to voters across the country.
The development comes against the backdrop of the commencement of campaign activities for the 2027 general elections, following the timetable and schedule released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The NDC had last week directed its candidates across the country to commence their respective campaigns in their states and constituencies in line with the electoral timetable.
The directive marked a significant step in the party’s preparations for the elections, with the leadership urging candidates and party members to take their campaigns to the grassroots and begin engaging directly with voters.
Senator Dickson, in a statement shared on his verified social media handles, called on members of the party, candidates and aspirants to remain united and work collectively towards securing victory for the NDC in the 2027 elections.
He urged party members to put aside individual differences and join hands in strengthening the party’s structures at all levels.
According to Dickson, the objective should be to ensure the success of NDC candidates across the country, from the presidential contest down to legislative and other elective positions.
He emphasised the need for unity and collective commitment among members as the party enters a critical phase of its preparations for the general elections.
The renewed consultations among the party’s top leadership are coming at a time when political parties are increasingly repositioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
For the NDC, the unveiling of its campaign council is expected to provide a formal framework for coordinating its nationwide electoral activities and translating the party’s political strategy into a structured campaign.
The involvement of Obi and Kwankwaso, alongside Dickson and other members of the national leadership, also underscores the importance the party is attaching to the process of building a coordinated campaign structure.
Party officials are expected to continue consultations in the coming days before the final announcement and inauguration of the campaign council.
With campaigns already commencing at the state and constituency levels, the NDC leadership is expected to intensify mobilisation efforts while seeking to maintain cohesion among its candidates, supporters and various organs across the country.
The party’s leadership has continued to stress the importance of unity as it prepares to present its candidates to Nigerians in what is expected to be a keenly contested 2027 general election.
The latest marathon meeting therefore signals another phase in the NDC’s preparations, as Obi, Kwankwaso, Dickson and other senior leaders work to consolidate the party’s structures and finalise arrangements for its nationwide campaign.
