In Nigeria’s evolving healthcare landscape, the demand for professionals who can combine clinical expertise with public-health knowledge, entrepreneurship and community engagement has never been greater.

Dr. Ataga Philip Aigbogun, a physician, public-health professional, health entrepreneur and community leader, represents a career trajectory that cuts across these areas, with more than two decades of experience in clinical medicine, epidemiology, medical imaging, research, teaching, disease surveillance and community intervention.

Aigbogun,has built his professional career around healthcare delivery and the broader question of how health systems can be strengthened to improve access and outcomes, particularly for underserved communities.

As the Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director of Ataga Scan and Diagnostic Services Limited, with operations in Kaduna and Abuja, he has also ventured into private-sector healthcare, establishing a diagnostic services enterprise focused on addressing gaps in access to medical imaging and diagnostic care.

His professional profile combines a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology obtained with distinction from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Master’s degree in Medical Imaging from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. He is also currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Health at Rivers State University.

Aigbogun,early professional experience was rooted in clinical medicine.

After completing his medical training at the University of Benin, he undertook his housemanship at the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, Niger State, between 2007 and 2008.

During the internship, he rotated through Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Community Medicine, gaining exposure to different aspects of hospital practice and public-health-oriented healthcare delivery.

He subsequently served as a Medical Officer at General Hospital, Sabo Tasha, Kaduna, from January 2010 to December 2013.

His responsibilities included the management of outpatient and inpatient cases, maternal-health services and community clinics. He also participated in health-promotion and immunisation outreach activities and served as a focal person for disease notification and surveillance.

That exposure to frontline healthcare and disease surveillance helped shape his subsequent interest in public health, epidemiology and health-system strengthening.

In 2018, Aigbogun founded Ataga Scan and Diagnostic Services Limited, a healthcare enterprise operating in Kaduna and Abuja.

The organisation was established with a focus on improving access to medical imaging and diagnostic services, an area he considers important to effective clinical decision-making.

As Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director, he oversees clinical quality, operations, workforce management, service delivery and organisational growth.

The enterprise has also provided a platform for employment creation and private-sector investment in healthcare, while serving patients requiring diagnostic services.

Under his leadership, the organisation has received recognition as a diagnostic services centre in Northern Nigeria.

His transition from clinical practice to healthcare entrepreneurship illustrates an approach that combines medical expertise with organisational management and private-sector service delivery.

Aigbogun,career has also increasingly taken an academic and research-oriented direction.

Between 2023 and 2025, he served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Research Associate in the Department of Public Health at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

In that capacity, he supported undergraduate teaching in epidemiology and biostatistics, supervised final-year research projects and assisted with public-health field placements.

He also co-facilitated community diagnosis exercises in Giwa Local Government Area and contributed to curriculum development for the course, Principles and Methods of Epidemiology.

His academic interests extend to disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, maternal and child health, reproductive health, primary healthcare, health financing, health equity and the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

In 2025, he served as a facilitator and resource person for the Bwari Area Council Health Department in the Federal Capital Territory, where he facilitated integrated disease-surveillance training and developed training materials and pre- and post-training assessment tools.

One of the major areas of Aigbogun current academic work is maternal and perinatal health.

His ongoing Ph.D. research at Rivers State University focuses on the health-system drivers of obstetric ultrasound scan utilisation and its impact on birth outcomes in North-West Nigeria.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach to examine infrastructure, workforce, policy and socioeconomic factors that influence access to and utilisation of obstetric ultrasound services.

The subject is significant because appropriate antenatal assessment and timely identification of potential complications can form an important part of maternal and perinatal healthcare.

By examining health-system and socioeconomic barriers to ultrasound utilisation, the research seeks to contribute evidence that could inform improvements in antenatal care and maternal and newborn health outcomes.

His previous postgraduate research also focused on a public-health concern. His MPH dissertation examined the comparative prevalence of anxiety and depression among undergraduate students in different faculties at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The research identified the importance of faculty-based counselling, stronger student support services, peer sensitisation, targeted financial assistance and psychologically responsive curriculum design.

For Aigbogun, public service has extended beyond professional healthcare responsibilities.

In 2019, he personally funded and built a police outpost in Juji Community, Kaduna State. The facility was subsequently commissioned by the State Commissioner of Police and senior government officials.

The initiative reflects his stated belief that community development requires contributions from individuals, institutions, government and other stakeholders.

His involvement in community health has also included volunteering with the Kaduna State Ministry of Health in Chikun Local Government Area in 2018 and participating in a community health survey organised by the Africa Women Action Group in 2019.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he served on the Nigeria Medical Association’s Kaduna State COVID-19 Committee. He also served on the association’s Welfare Committee in 2023.

These engagements have provided opportunities for him to participate in professional discussions, community interventions and health-related activities outside conventional clinical practice.

A distinctive feature of Aigbogun professional profile is the combination of clinical medicine, public-health science and business management.

His competencies include epidemiological study design, quantitative data analysis using statistical packages such as SPSS, STATA, R and Epi Info, as well as qualitative research methods involving focus-group discussions, in-depth interviews, thematic analysis and NVivo.

He has also undertaken training in systematic reviews and meta-analysis, research ethics and good clinical practice, advanced biostatistics and grant writing.

His professional development has included a systematic review and meta-analysis programme with the International Institute of AI Research in 2026, a field epidemiology practicum with the Bwari Area Council Public Health Department in 2025, grant-writing training through the ABU Distance Learning Centre in 2025, and advanced biostatistics training in 2024.

He also completed training in research ethics and Good Clinical Practice at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in 2023.

Aigbogun is fully registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and has been a member of the Nigeria Medical Association since 2007.

He became a full member of the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria in 2025.

He is also associated with several professional bodies, including the Corporate Administrators Institute, the MSME Institute of Management and Professional Studies and the Global Institute for Human Excellence, Philadelphia, United States.

His career and community activities have attracted a number of recognitions, including honours described as “Icon of Nation Building,” “Pillar of Hope,” “A Voice for Progress,” “Patron of West Africa Youth,” “Positive Impact Integrity,” “Icon of Hope” and “Symbolic African Hero.”

He has also been recognised in relation to his work in diagnostic services in Northern Nigeria.

With experience spanning hospitals, academia, private healthcare and community interventions, Aigbogun professional interests have increasingly moved towards broader questions of health policy and health-system performance.

His stated areas of policy interest include strengthening primary healthcare, improving maternal and child health, advancing health equity, improving health financing and developing stronger disease-surveillance systems.
