President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has held a high-level strategic meeting with the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), in Lagos, with a focus on the country’s security situation, ongoing counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations and measures to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Residence in Lagos, was part of the President’s continuing security briefings and policy engagements with senior government officials on efforts to address security and economic challenges confronting the country.
During the meeting, Tinubu reviewed the progress of ongoing military operations aimed at tackling insurgency, banditry and other security threats, while also considering strategies for improving inter-agency coordination and sustaining peace across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the discussions also centred on the national defence framework and the need to align security strategies among relevant government agencies for more effective responses to emerging threats.
The President, according to the statement, expressed satisfaction with the steady progress being recorded in efforts to secure vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing the necessary support to the Ministry of Defence and the nation’s security agencies to enable them effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
The Minister of Defence, Gen. Musa, in his briefing, presented an overview of current defence initiatives and frontline operational requirements, including logistics and other measures considered necessary to sustain military operations across the country.
He also briefed the President on proposed reforms designed to strengthen the armed forces, improve troop morale, modernise military hardware and enhance defence infrastructure across the various regions of the country.
The briefing comes against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s continuing efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the military in confronting terrorism, banditry and other forms of violent insecurity.
Musa, who expressed appreciation to the President for his continued guidance and support for the nation’s security architecture, assured that the Ministry of Defence would remain committed to executing its mandate with professionalism, determination and integrity.
He further assured that the ministry would continue to work with the relevant security agencies to implement measures aimed at improving the effectiveness of the country’s defence and security system.
The strategic meeting is also expected to reinforce the administration’s emphasis on coordinated action among the military and other security institutions, particularly in areas affected by insurgency and banditry.
The President’s engagement with the Defence Minister forms part of a broader pattern of regular security consultations aimed at ensuring that developments on the security front receive sustained attention at the highest level of government.
The administration has continued to emphasise the importance of strengthening national security as a foundation for economic development, protection of communities and the creation of an environment conducive to investment and sustainable development.
The Lagos meeting therefore provided an opportunity for the President and the Defence Minister to assess current security operations, identify operational requirements and consider further measures to strengthen Nigeria’s defence posture.
The Ministry of Defence said it remains resolute in implementing the government’s security priorities and ensuring that the armed forces are positioned to respond effectively to threats to the nation’s territorial integrity, peace and stability.
