The Sokoto State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Shamsuddeen Ahmad Aliyu, has promised to prioritise the welfare of residents and ensure that the benefits of democracy reach every community in the state if elected governor in the 2027 general elections.
Aliyu, who made the pledge after receiving his Certificate of Return, said his administration would focus on improving the living conditions of the people and ensuring that the dividends of democracy were not restricted to a privileged few.
He stated that his ambition was to build a state where residents could enjoy better living conditions rather than continue to struggle with hardship and deprivation.
The NDC governorship candidate made the remarks during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the inauguration of its National Campaign Council (NCC), and the presentation of Certificates of Return to candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on his vision for Sokoto State, Aliyu said his administration, if elected, would work towards ensuring that ordinary citizens felt the impact of government policies and programmes in their daily lives.
He emphasised that democracy should translate into tangible benefits for the people, including improved welfare, greater opportunities and better living standards.
According to him, the people of Sokoto deserve governance that responds to their needs and makes their well-being a central priority.
“I want to see my people enjoying life, not suffering in my state. They must enjoy the dividends of democracy if I am elected in 2027,” he said.
Aliyu’s remarks underscored his campaign promise to place the welfare of residents at the centre of his proposed administration.
He also expressed confidence in the NDC’s prospects in the forthcoming elections, saying the party was preparing for the 2027 polls with the aim of securing victory.
The candidate urged Nigerians to consider the NDC’s presidential ticket, featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, as the country prepares for the next general elections.
He described the two politicians as candidates he believed Nigerians should support in 2027, expressing confidence in their ability to lead the country.
His comments reflect the NDC’s broader effort to position itself as an alternative political platform ahead of the elections, with its candidates expected to present their programmes and engage voters across the country.
The presentation of Certificates of Return to party candidates formed part of the NDC’s preparations for the electoral contest, providing an opportunity for its flag bearers to reaffirm their commitments and outline their expectations for the campaign period.
For Aliyu, the certificate presentation represents a step towards the challenge of securing the confidence of Sokoto voters, whose decisions in 2027 will determine the state’s next governor.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the general elections, the NDC candidate’s pledge places public welfare and the equitable distribution of democratic benefits at the centre of his proposed governorship agenda.
However, his ability to translate these promises into concrete policies and measurable improvements would ultimately depend on his electoral success, the programmes he presents to voters and the implementation of his administration’s plans if elected.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Aliyu and other candidates are expected to face increasing scrutiny over their policy proposals, leadership experience and capacity to address the concerns of their respective constituencies.
