The Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, MON, has arrived in São Tomé and Príncipe to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the inauguration of President Carlos Manuel Vila Nova for a second five-year term.
President Vila Nova is scheduled to be sworn in on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the National Assembly (Assembleia Nacional) in São Tomé, following his victory in the presidential election held on Saturday, July 19, 2026.
Matawalle’s presence at the ceremony is seen as a demonstration of Nigeria’s enduring diplomatic ties with São Tomé and Príncipe and the Federal Government’s continued commitment to democratic governance, peace and stability within the Gulf of Guinea region.
The Minister, who arrived in the island nation ahead of the inauguration, is expected to convey President Tinubu’s goodwill and congratulations to President Vila Nova on his re-election and assumption of a second term in office.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Matawalle will also engage the São Toméan leadership on issues of mutual interest, particularly defence cooperation and regional security.
The discussions are expected to further strengthen cooperation between both countries in addressing common security challenges and promoting peace and stability in the Gulf of Guinea, a region of strategic importance to both nations.
Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe have maintained cordial diplomatic relations, with cooperation spanning political, economic and security matters. Their relationship is also underpinned by common interests in democratic governance, economic development and maritime security.
The Gulf of Guinea remains strategically important because of its extensive maritime routes and economic activities, making security cooperation among countries in the region critical to protecting maritime commerce and other legitimate economic activities.
Matawalle’s representation of President Tinubu therefore provides an opportunity for Nigeria to reaffirm its support for São Tomé and Príncipe’s democratic institutions while strengthening bilateral engagement on security and other areas of shared interest.
The Federal Government has consistently emphasised the importance of regional collaboration in confronting security threats and creating an environment conducive to economic growth and development.
The Ministry of Defence said Nigeria’s participation in the presidential inauguration further reflected the country’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and strategic partnerships with neighbouring and regional countries.
The ceremony is expected to bring together leaders and representatives from across Africa and beyond as São Tomé and Príncipe begins President Vila Nova’s second five-year tenure.
Matawalle’s participation is consequently expected to deepen the longstanding relationship between Abuja and São Tomé while reinforcing Nigeria’s role in supporting democratic stability and collective security efforts in the Gulf of Guinea.
